Active Withernsea Celebrates a Year of Success in Collaboration with Doorstep Sports and StreetGames

Active Withernsea is delighted to share the success of its collaborative efforts with Doorstep Sports and StreetGames over the past year. This unique partnership has brought about positive changes in the Withernsea community, focusing on promoting sports, fitness, and overall wellbeing.

Tennis Takes Root in Withernsea

A dedicated group in Withernsea identified the need, and for the last couple of years, have been developing tennis opportunities. Leveraging Doorstep Sports funds, Withernsea Tennis Association secured a tennis coach to work with children at the primary school. Withernsea Tennis Association is continuing to evolve with ambitious plans to revamp three tennis courts in the Town.

Empowering Girls through Football

With a passion for promoting girls' sports, Withernsea Football Club utilised Doorstep funds to establish a Girls Football Club. Laney, a driving force behind this initiative, not only led the club into a league but also utilised skills from a multi-skills level 2 course to introduce football to high school girls through weekly sessions.

Cricket to Futsal/Football Pathway

The Doorstep Sports cricket club, led by JD Development, aimed to create regular participation at Patrington Cricket Club. While some participants pursued this path and are now regularly playing cricket, more varied opportunities led others to futsal/football, with redirection a number of young people joining Withernsea AFC. Due to pathways directly into the local clubs being formed, the Doorstep Sport Club was no longer required. It's great to see young people being directly signposted into local sports clubs.

Developing Golf Opportunities for Young People

Active Withernsea is currently working with Withernsea Golf Club to develop the opportunities for young people to play golf.

Fun Fitness to 1:1 Swimming Sessions for SEND Youth

Originally aimed at creating a welcoming gym environment for juniors, the Fun Fitness project evolved. Doorstep funds were redirected to support 1:1 swimming sessions for young people with SEND in collaboration with The Lookout, exemplifying adaptability in response to community needs.

Youth-Led Doorstep Festival Triumph

The Doorstep Festival held in summer 2022 was a resounding success. Led by three local young people who completed the multi-skills level 2 course, the festival enabled 70 participants to explore new sports and activities. Recognising their outstanding contribution, the trio received the StreetGames regional Best Youth-Led Activity Award.

Empowering young people through training

An important part of the Doorstep Sport project was to up skill and empower young people to take the lead. A multi-skills level 2 course equipped eight young people with the skills to lead sports sessions and with transferable skills for future employment. A Mental Health First Aid course and workshops within the school were also delivered. The Doorstep Sports project has enabled local young people to participate in and lead sporting activities.

As Active Withernsea looks ahead, the increase in opportunities for young people to be active serve as a testament to the positive impact that collaborative initiatives can have on a community's health and wellbeing.
