Empowering Play and Confidence-Building at Withernsea Primary School.
When Withernsea Primary School completed the work on their new building, they identified an opportunity to transform the new playground into a children-designed fun activity space. Active Withernsea worked with the children to draw ideas of how the space could be developed. The ideas were combined, and an active play space was imagined. The space was transformed with new markers added to the playground and equipment provided.
What sets this initiative apart is the children of the primary school had been involved in the design and implementation process of the playground. Their input ensured that the activities resonate with the interests and preferences of the primary students, creating a playground environment that truly reflects the community it serves.
Once the playground was transformed, Withernsea High School's Youth Health Champions have joined forces with the Primary School to support the children with playing and being active in the space. They have been involved in delivering engaging after-school sessions tailored for Key Stage 1 Primary students. The focus is on bringing children into the world of playground games, fostering not only physical activity but also building their confidence through interactive and inclusive play.
Beyond the school day, the playground remains open for families to utilise and play together, reinforcing the idea of a shared space for both learning and recreation. This holistic approach encourages family engagement, fostering a sense of community and reinforcing the importance of physical activity as a collective experience.
The Youth Health Champions' commitment to creating an inclusive and enjoyable playground experience is a testament to the positive impact it has on the students' overall well-being, from building confidence to nurturing a love for active play. As the primary school playground is used every day, the collaborative efforts of the Youth Health Champions ensure a vibrant and dynamic space that reflects the spirit of the community.
