How Physical Literacy Is Helping Students Get Active at Withernsea High

At Active Humber, we’re always looking for new ways to help children and young people become more active. That’s why we’re proud to share the work of Lucy Gray, our Development Manager for Children and Young People, who has been part of Sport England’s Patchwork Programme. This is a national programme, Lucy has been working with the school and East Yorkshire Place Partner, it has helped Lucy and the team explore how Physical Literacy can be used in schools to support young people’s activity levels and wellbeing.

The Sport England Patchwork Programme focuses on building confidence, skills, and enjoyment in being active, so every young person can find what works for them. The idea is to learn from different places and share what works across the country.

Lucy has been working closely with Withernsea High School and East Yorkshire Place Partner to develop a whole-school approach that puts Physical Literacy at the heart of PE, sport, and enrichment. This approach focuses on co-designing a curriculum with students, staff, and partners to make sure every young person has a positive experience in physical activity – especially girls, who can often feel left behind.

Thanks to these efforts, the school has already seen promising results. Student engagement and enjoyment in physical activity have improved, and attendance among pupils involved in the new initiatives has increased. Teachers have also given positive feedback, and a new leadership team starting in September 2025 will help take this work even further.

This project shows how embedding Physical Literacy in school life can create lasting change – not just in PE lessons, but across a young person’s whole school experience. We’re excited to see how this work continues to grow and look forward to supporting more schools on this journey. Movement is more than physical activity, it can shape how we think, feel, and connect in many ways and enrich lives.
