Case Study

Tackling Inequalities Funding to develop Walks for Health

How did the Tackling Inequalities Funding (TIF) help?

Welcome House were keen to support asylum seekers and refugees across Hull to undertake supported health walks across the City. The funding supported the employment of 5 walk facilitators who organised and delivered the various walks.

Why was the project needed?

Welcome House had identified a need across their networks to support individuals with their physical and mental health, especially those who had been negatively impacted by the pandemic and had become isolated, and lonely as a result of lockdown. The health walks were an opportunity to undertake physical exercise, supporting people to get outdoors and to meet others in a similar position to themselves.

How did TIF help?

The funding was able to support the employment of 5 passionate walk facilitators who between them worked with over 100 people to deliver the health walks across their networks and support individuals to not only to take part but also to meet other people, which had a big impact on these individual's physical and mental wellbeing as a result.

Feedback from sessions included:

“I am glad to have participated in this experience and I thank Muhammad for motivating me to continue. It was a very beneficial experience for my health.” (Asel, Beneficiary)

“The scheme has been a great success, a truly unique and fun job. I am a people person so this job has been a great opportunity to meet new people and find out about their backgrounds and perspectives. This also motivated me to get out and walk in what are the coldest and least inviting months of the year. As well as meeting new people and finding out about them, it has been an immense privilege to help make their lives better. (David, Walk facilitator)
