Active Ageing

Physical inactivity is one of the leading factors for poor health and well-being later in life. This factor plus the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have increased physical inactivity levels further.

Benefits of exercise:

  • Fall prevention: Regular exercise reduces the risk of falls.
  • Health conditions: It can lower your risk of developing various health conditions (e.g., heart disease, diabetes, cancer) or help manage existing ones.
  • Confidence boost: Exercise enhances self-assurance.
  • Mood improvement: Physical activity releases endorphins, the “happy hormones.”
  • Stress relief: Exercise helps alleviate stress.
  • Aches and pains: It can reduce discomfort.
  • Sense of achievement: Achieving fitness goals boosts morale.
  • Daily tasks made easier: From climbing stairs to chasing after grandchildren, exercise enhances everyday functionality.
  • Energy boost: Staying active provides vitality

Active Humber are working towards reducing the barriers to physical activity for people living and working in the Humber. In the Humber we have an ageing population which means we need to take rapid action to improve peoples physical activity levels to improve the health and well being of the residents, reduce health inequalities and reduce the pressure on the health system locally.

Barriers to physical activity need to be addressed in local areas, using a whole systems approach to support physical activity in the community. The UK's ageing population means society needs to take rapid action to improve people’s physical activity levels, so that we are all able to enjoy our longer lives.

Case Study: Doug's Story

At the age of 99, Doug attends Cleethorpes Trinity Boxing Academy every week for a light exercise session. The classes blend physical activity and socializing for people living with a neurological condition. Hear Doug talk about how attending the class has benefitted his life in the video below:

Get Out Get Active

The Get Out Get Active programme which started in March 2020 and completed in November 2023 supported over 800 people in the Humber living with a long term health condition to get active and stay active.

The funding from Spirit of 2012 and the London Marathon Trust enabled Active Humber to deliver 32 sustainable activities across the Humber region.

These sessions worked with several organisations of the VSCE sector, health and local authorities.

Discover some of the ways we worked to supported people living across the Humber region over the three years in the video below:
