Active Ageing

Staying Active for a Healthier Life

Not being active is one of the biggest reasons people experience poor health as they get older. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has made this problem even worse, increasing inactivity levels across the Humber.

Why Exercise Matters

  • Prevents falls – Regular movement helps improve balance and reduces the risk of falling.
  • Improves health – Lowers the risk of diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and helps manage existing conditions.
  • Boosts confidence – Exercise makes you feel stronger and more capable.
  • Lifts mood – Physical activity releases “happy hormones” (endorphins).
  • Reduces stress – Helps you feel more relaxed.
  • Eases aches and pains – Staying active can reduce discomfort.
  • Provides a sense of achievement – Reaching fitness goals feels rewarding.
  • Makes daily tasks easier – Whether it’s climbing stairs or playing with grandchildren, movement helps.
  • Increases energy – Staying active keeps you feeling more awake and refreshed.

Making Physical Activity Accessible in the Humber

The Humber has an ageing population, so we need to act fast to help people become more active. This will:

  • Improve overall health and well-being.
  • Reduce health inequalities.
  • Ease pressure on the local healthcare system.

To make this happen, we need to remove barriers to exercise and work together as a community to support active lifestyles for all ages.

Case Study: Doug's Story

Doug, who is 99 years old, attends Cleethorpes Trinity Boxing Academy every week for light exercise. These sessions combine movement and social interaction, especially for people with neurological conditions. Watch Doug’s story in the video below to see how staying active has improved his life.

Get Out Get Active

From March 2020 to November 2023, the Get Out Get Active programme helped over 800 people in the Humber with long-term health conditions to stay active.

Thanks to funding from Spirit of 2012 and the London Marathon Trust, Active Humber launched 32 ongoing activities across the region. These sessions were run in partnership with community groups, health organisations, and local councils.

Watch the video below to see how we supported people across the Humber over three years.
