Introducing new sports to Children and Young People

Case Study

New opportunities to get young people moving in schools

At the end of the academic year, Lucy Gray, our Development Manager; Children and Young People, discussed with Claire, the SSCO at The Snaith School options of how to get more young people moving in different activities away from traditional sports.

The Snaith School is a secondary school in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

After consultation with students and teachers, Active Humber was keen to explore their Pickleball idea. Our organisation wanted to support The Snaith School as it is rurally isolated and the area also lacks parks, playing fields and club opportunities.

Funding from School Games via Active Humber allowed the school to purchase a range of pickleball equipment making it possible to achieve:

• CPD staff opportunities

• Now part of the curriculum for years 9’s, 10’s and 11’s

• Inclusive sport, adaptable and can be tailored to meet individual needs

• Lunchtime club opportunities that is almost full every time it runs

• Staff pickleball – every half term (staff ask when the next one will be as it is FUN!)

Claire as an SSCO has also used pickleball for transition festivals so that she can meet all the children in year 6 who will be moving up to The Snaith School, she likes to be that friendly face that makes transition less daunting, it also allows young people to visit the school for an event in advance to starting.
