Case Study

SGO Funding linked to CP SEND work

In the academic year 23/24 Active Humber have supported School Games Organisers across the area to deliver place based projects using local data and insight to identify need using the Humber School Games funding.

Craig Dobbs the Partnership Development Manager/School Games Organiser in North East Lincolnshire identified the increase of young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) within schools, increasing from 16.6% to 17.3% (22-23 NASEN Data), this shows a clear need for increased opportunities for physical activity. The School Sport Partnership North East Lincolnshire have been able to extend opportunities available to primary, and secondary pupils, this project has fostered inclusivity and enhanced the educational experience for SEND students by providing more opportunities to be physically active.

Impact

Increased Participation: The introduction of new events and additional facilities led to a marked rise in student participation, evidenced by a 45% increase in attendance.

Leadership Development: Collaborating with special schools as host sites has cultivated leadership skills among students, enabling them to facilitate events such as New Age Kurling, Boccia, and Multiskills opportunities.

Enhanced Provision: The project successfully broadened the range of opportunities available to SEND students across mainstream primary, secondary, and special schools within the area.

The project has made significant strides in enhancing physical activity provisions for SEND pupils. By fostering a culture of competition, development, and engagement, it has not only boosted participation rates but also nurtured essential skills in students, contributing to their overall development and inclusion within their school communities and beyond.

In the academic year 24/25 we are looking forward to supporting further place based work with the School Games Organisers in the Humber.
