Case Study

Tackling Inequalities Funding supports individuals isolating to be physically active

How did the Tackling Inequalities Funding (TIF) help?

Prior to lockdown Hull Churches Home from Hospital Service offered weekly exercise sessions at their Centre. Covid meant that all activities stopped and a lot of the families and individuals they support were forced to self isolate and stay home, which meant they were only able to exercise in their own homes. Tackling Inequalities Funding supported HcHfH to develop the Good Moves Project to provide online exercise sessions to their service users by purchasing tablets and data for them to loan out and to purchase equipment to support the individuals to carry out exercises in their own homes.

Why was the project needed?

Lockdown meant many of their service users were suddenly very isolated and didn't have the ability to exercise in their usual ways. In addition, many didn't have access to the technology to be able to access online sessions in their own homes, so support was required to provide individuals with the technology and weekly exercise classes and equipment.

How did TIF help?

HcHfH ran 2 weekly online exercise classes for a total of 24 individuals over 12 weeks. Those attending the sessions were aged from 64-92 years of age and most had a long term health condition. Not only did the project support those who had no knowledge of accessing technology to be able to efficiently use a tablet, they were able to access exercise sessions in their own homes and support them to interact with others, which they otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity to do. This has supported these individuals physically and emotionally. All clients reported that they have continued with some form of exercise within their home since the online sessions have finished and feel better for being active.

Feedback from sessions included:

'The course has given me something to look forward to and the inclination to continue exercise in some manner whilst spending more time at home...I have continued to use some of the techniques  acquired during the course and am feeling positive and healthier from this' Mrs B
