Case Study

The St Lawrence Academy – North Lincolnshire

Partnerships with schools

Active Humber has been partnering with The St Lawrence Academy in North Lincolnshire for the past two years, supporting them through the School Games and Opening Schools Facilities (OSF) projects. A key initiative has been the Girl’s Carousel, which provided Year 11 girls, who are not typically engaged in school PE, with the chance to try out a range of non-traditional activities. Over six weeks at The Pods in Scunthorpe, the girls took part in sessions such as stretching, junior gym, fitness classes, and walking. The feedback from students was so positive that the programme is being repeated this year.

Building positive links to physical activity

One of the standout successes from the project was how much the girls enjoyed the walking sessions around Central Park. Building on this, The St Lawrence Academy has now introduced “wellbeing walks” as part of their Year 11 PE options. They’re running two walks a week, and the option has proved to be a hit with both boys and girls who aren’t particularly interested in traditional sports. The walks provide a way for these students to stay active in a more relaxed and enjoyable environment.

The Girl’s Carousel has helped The St Lawrence Academy to embrace a broader view of physical activity, understanding that students can connect with movement in different ways, beyond the usual PE and sports. Active Humber looks forward to continuing their work with the academy on more exciting projects this academic year.
