This Girl Can: Let's get out there- Hannahs's Tips

Earlier this month Hannah from our team shared the benefits of getting active in outdoor environments, as we supported the new This Girl Can campaign.

At Active Humber we believe if Active Environments are planned into all we do; road networks, building developments, public spaces etc it would make moving even easier for everyone!

Hannah’s sharing her top tips to help everyone get active outdoors in blue (water) and green (open green spaces) spaces.

One of the simplest things you can do to get active in the environment is to go for a walk. You don’t need any fancy equipment and it can also be used as a mode of transport. Just make sure you are wearing the correct footwear- I like to wear either a pair of trainers or my walking boots if it is a longer/ uneven walk

I always like to make sure I have checked the weather when I head outside to be active. It means you can prepare yourself with the correct clothing for the weather conditions and makes being active outside much more enjoyable. I have also found that checking the weather for activities such as paddleboarding is essential as having an offshore breeze can put yourself and others in serious danger!

Here are some other tips you might find useful if you’re planning on getting active outdoors:

  • Plan your route- this reduces the chance of you getting lost or into difficulty
  • Tell somebody your plan, your route, time it should take and when your expected to be back
  • Always take a phone with you- this is good if you get lost or need to contact someone for help. You can also use your phone to take photos, listen to a podcast or to follow a workout routine
  • Have less of a focus on having to cover a certain distance and more focus on having fun trying new things and going new places
  • Go with a friend where possible- this makes for a good social activity but also for safety
  • Take a water bottle with you to stay hydrated
