Today is the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
Sport and Physical activity are powerful tools to strengthen social ties and positively impact communities. They promote sustainable development and peace as well as championing solidarity and respect for all. With this in mind we spoke to our friends at Hull Roundheads, an inclusive Rugby Club based in Hull, to get their thoughts on how sport and physical activity plays its part in the development of peace. Here is what they had to say:
“A big part of what we are doing at Hull Roundheads is keeping the issue of Trans Inclusion visible within sport. Last year the RFU banned trans women from taking part in rugby and this has added barriers to inclusion for our team mates. To show our solidarity we wear trans flag laces and have pictures with the trans flag before and after each game.”
“We believe that Rugby should be for everyone”
“Sport has helped me to understand more about gender and how I express my gender identity.”
“Rugby has helped me to break down barriers and reframe masculinity”
