The HAF Alliance, a collaboration of national and local charities with extensive experience in delivering large-scale holiday activities, has launched the #HolidaysMatter campaign to ensure children have active and enriching summer holidays. This initiative, part of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, has been crucial since 2021 in providing healthy and fulfilling holiday experiences for children in underserved communities.
With over four million children growing up in low-income families, the need for such programmes is more pressing than ever. The #HolidaysMatter campaign aims to secure continued funding and support from policymakers to expand the reach of these vital holiday activities. These programmes not only bridge the inequalities gap but also promote physical and mental well-being through fun activities and nutritious meals.
Holiday activities offer multi-sport opportunities that keep children engaged in physical activity, essential for their overall development. These activities help mitigate learning loss, ensuring children return to school ready to succeed and with a positive mindset. The HAF Alliance emphasises the importance of investing in the Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector, which provides safe spaces and trusted adults for children during holiday periods.
The campaign also addresses critical issues such as food insecurity, social isolation, and inactivity in underserved communities. By providing nutritious meals and engaging activities, holiday programmes support the physical and mental well-being of children and young people.
The HAF Alliance calls on everyone to support the #HolidaysMatter campaign by sharing it on social media using the hashtag #HolidaysMatter. For more information and to get involved, visit the HAF Alliance website at www.hafalliance.org.
By joining forces, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to enjoy healthy, active, and fulfilling holiday experiences, bridging the inequalities gap and fostering positive educational outcomes.
(Please note that HAF is only available for children on Free School Meals)
