Sport England’s campaign has helped over three-million more women get physically active whilst creating a realistic version of exercise.
Funding of £30 million from the National Lottery has enabled the campaign to keep the momentum going, encouraging the physical, mental and social benefits of sport.
Tim Hollingsworth, Sport England’s chief executive, has thanked supporters saying: "It’s led the charge in breaking down the barriers that prevent women from engaging in sport and physical activity and tackling the gender activity gap, and helped teach us all how to think and act differently.”
The campaign’s mission has remained clear since the beginning, to tackle the gender activity gap that saw far fewer women getting active than men.
Since its launch, This Girl Can has tackled taboo subjects that affect women’s abilities and confidence to get active such as cellulite, childbirth, breastfeeding, homeschooling, menstruation and menopause by hosting clubs, classes, Disney Dance Along’s, Let’s Get Out There projects and many more.
More recently, it has championed women's right to exercise without fear of harassment or intimidation in the darker months with the Let’s Lift the Curfew activation.
Kate Dale, This Girl Can's marketing director, said: "This Girl Can marked the end of the accepted wisdom that getting sweaty in the gym, jumping into a pool without fear of judgement or playing football with your friends wasn’t for women.
"Low confidence, poor body image, lack of time and enjoyment, and safety fears were all holding women back.
"This Girl Can has helped to break down those barriers, with eight in 10 women reporting that it boosted their confidence to get active.
"But research shows the gender activity gap stubbornly persists, with half a million fewer active women than men. Until all women are active, This Girl Can does not stop. Here’s to the next decade of changing women’s lives."
This year, Sport England’s campaign will focus on supporting women who face cultural or systemic barriers by directly providing advice, inspiration and encouragement while also working with activity providers to help create more inclusive environments.
Here’s to another year of This Girl Can empowering women to enjoy the good health, stress relief, joy and connection that an active lifestyle can bring.
