Taking meaningful action this Race Equality Week

03-02-2026

This week marks Race Equality Week and we want to reflect on how we are taking meaning full action because lasting, positive change requires participation from everyone.

Yorkshire and Humber Anti-Racism in Sport group

We are proud to be a part of the Yorkshire and Humber Anti-Racism in Sport Group alongside our local Active Partnerships, North Yorkshire Sport & Yorkshire Sport Foundation.

Collaborating in this way has contributed to greater confidence in addressing racism, more intentional conversations around equity, diversity and inclusion, and increased commitment to embedding anti-racist approaches across strategy, workforce development and community engagement.

A key milestone the group achieved was the writing of the Group’s Terms of Reference. This ensured the group’s purpose, governance and ways of working were clearly defined and aligned with anti-racist principles. The revised Terms of Reference have improved accountability, clarified decision-making, and set clear expectations around representation, allyship and collective responsibility. This has enabled the group to operate more effectively, providing a strong foundation for future growth and impact. The writing of the Terms of Reference is an ongoing process as the group grows and learns.

Bystander Awareness Training

Most of us hesitate to act when we witness harmful behaviour, and there’s a reason. The bystander effect means we often assume someone else will step in, or we look to others to see how they react. This can allow harm to continue unnoticed.

The good news: it doesn’t have to be this way. Active Bystanders notice harmful behaviour and take safe, constructive action instead of ignoring it.

Our free Bystander Awareness training uses real-life examples to help you understand the bystander effect, build confidence, and develop practical skills to intervene safely. Every intervention helps shift the culture, creating safer, fairer, and more inclusive environments in communities, workplaces, and sports clubs.
