Ken Reader

Ken has been one of our community ambassadors at Active Humber since the programme was first set up over a year ago.

Ken Reader’s story:

I have been fishing since I was ten years old, starting with a bob line off the harbour wall at Scarborough to then stepping up starting beach casting. Sea fishing was all I knew until I was 18 years old when my father-in-law introduced me to freshwater fishing. My first time out with him I caught two skimmer bream -after that I was “hooked”. -excuse the pun! … it’s true though and that’s all it takes.

From there, I went on to get my coaching certificates but after two years I started to fall to the temptation of drink. I spent a long time in that dark tunnel, and I couldn’t see any way out.

When I eventually came out at the other side, I made a vow to myself that I was never going back but I needed something to keep me focused and help me keep my sobriety. Angling was to be my saviour.

I renewed all my certificates and courses that I needed. Then one night after a recovery meeting I was talking to my now business partner Dave about fishing and starting up a business. On that evening, “Angle For The Community” was formed. We are now delivering angling to all ages and diversity and based at the lovely Homestead Park Lake, Immingham.

Help needed:

However, we are greatly in need of volunteers. Should the right people come and show commitment we would look into moving them onto their coaching badges and welcome them to our team. With more coaches we will be able to concentrate more on teaching -instead of rushing around. And focus on quality over quantity.

Anyone using the services of this organisation will receive not only angling coaching from qualified, DBS checked coaches but also insight and education on topics such as the environment, conservation, wellbeing and mindfulness amongst others.

Angling was to be my saviour. I renewed all my certificates and courses that I needed, it is the best thing I ever did.

What is our Community Ambassador Scheme?

Active Humber works with local partners to help people in Hull, East Riding, North Lincolnshire, and North East Lincolnshire become more active to improve their health and happiness.

To support this, we’ve created the Community Ambassador Scheme, which aims to inspire people to get moving and be more active.

We’re looking for volunteers in the Humber area to share how being active has helped them and to encourage others to get involved. We especially want ambassadors who’ve faced challenges like disabilities, mental health issues, living in rural areas, or finding creative ways to stay active.

Want More Information?

For details, email info@activehumber.co.uk or call 01482 244344.

How to Sign Up:

If you’ve overcome challenges to being active and want to inspire others, sign up as a volunteer ambassador using this form.
