Our team share how the women in our lives inspire us to keep moving each day

48% of teenage girls say their mum is their biggest supporter when it comes to being active, that's why we want to celebrate in our organisation how the women in our lives have inspired us to keep active.

Many girls struggle with confidence, body image and worries about being judged. According to Women in Sport, 61% of teenage girls feel judged when taking part in sport, while 50% don’t feel good enough to join in.

This half term, why not make the most of that connection? Invite your daughter, niece or the teenager in your life and get moving together. Kick a ball, head to the court or take the dog for a longer walk.

It doesn’t have to be about being good at sport. It’s about spending time together, trying something new, sharing a laugh and creating memories that last.

Our female colleagues at Active Humber are sharing some of their favourite ways they get active alongside their mums and mother figures, and how they inspire them to keep moving.

Rebecca Holmes, our Development Manager; Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, explains: "One of my favourite things to do is to be out walking in nature with my mum. Over the past 10 years, we’ve spent a lot of time on the East Yorkshire Coast, walking, exploring and being together in nature.

"Choosing to be physically active isn’t just about the steps or the physical benefits, it’s about the space it creates for us both. Our walks have taken us through some of the most stunning landscapes this region has to offer. From the cliff paths of Flamborough Head to Seal and Dolphin spotting to the sound of nestling sea birds at Bempton Cliffs.

"We've spent many hours walking on many beaches and hikes in search for waterfalls from Hayburn Wyke to Goathland’s primary waterfall, Mallyan Spout.

"When we are out walking, surrounded by trees, beautiful views and the peaceful sounds of nature, the noise of everyday life just fades away. We talk about everything and nothing at all. We laugh; we are present in the moment together."

At Active Humber, we believe that sport and physical activity bring people together through fun, achievement, and shared experiences. But we also know that not everyone feels safe or welcome in these spaces and have made an ongoing commitment to improve accessibility for all. Through targeted work with organisations where barriers are the greatest, we want to turn the Humber into a place where sport and physical activities are accessible to everyone, where everyone is engaged, embraced and most of all, safe.

Lucy Playford, our Marketing Manager, says how she gets active alongside her twin daughters: "One of our favourite ways to spend time together is going for a walk, usually with a coffee stop along the way. It's lovely to see they've kept that habit and still enjoy walking with friends too.

"My twin daughters are both in their second year at university, and now I have a little more free time at home, I've been enjoying exercising more myself. We've ended up chatting about fitness and wellbeing quite a bit, and in recent months they've both joined gyms at their universities too.

"Whether I've influenced them or it's just a coincidence, I'm not sure, but I think positive role modelling is often far more powerful than preaching when it comes to encouraging behaviours."
