Anti-Racism In Sport Group Yorkshire and Humber

The Yorkshire and Humber Anti Racism in Sport group is proud to welcome Fatima Khan Shah as the new chair.

The group was formed in 2022 to challenge the racial inequalities that prevent or discourage people from leading active lives and enjoying the benefits of sport and physical activity.

Fatima is the first Inclusivity Champion for West Yorkshire, a role shared between the West Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and West Yorkshire Health and Care partnership, the consortium of healthcare, commissioning and local government organisations.

Fatima said: “Sport should be open to all, irrespective of your path in life or heritage. It’s a massive enabler for health and wellbeing, a great social leveller, and demonstrates the art of the possible to our young people. I have a real aspiration to embed equity and fairness in sport, so I’m thrilled to be taking on this new role.”

Fatima has established a strong reputation as an advocate for Public and Carer Involvement, Compassionate Leadership, and Inclusion. She has been consistently acknowledged in the HSJ’s list of the top 50 most influential health leaders from ethnic minority backgrounds.

David Gent, CEO of Active Humber, expressed his enthusiasm for Fatima’s appointment: "We are very happy to welcome a new Chair to the Anti-Racism in Sport group. Fatima’s experience and commitment to inclusivity makes her the perfect person to help our efforts to challenge the racial inequalities that prevent people from enjoying the benefits of sport and physical activity."

Members of Anti Racism in Sport Group include local authorities, sports clubs and their community trusts, and the three Active Partnerships of the region (Active Humber, North Yorkshire Sport, Yorkshire Sport Foundation).

Organisations that want to support are asked to read the Commitment to tackling racism and racial inequality in community sport and join the 126 organisations that have signed up and pledged to take action.
