Getting the Humber active in a sustainable way this Earth Overshoot Day

30-07-2026

Today is Earth Overshoot Day which marks the date on which the environmental impact of human demand for natural resources exceeds the regenerative capacity of the ecosystem for that year.

It puts the spotlight on the relationship between our ecological footprint and the planet’s biocapacity to regenerate itself. In terms of sustainability, year after year, human beings are destroying resources more rapidly than the planet is regenerating, thus disrupting a balance that is necessary for the earth’s survival.

Today is a very significant date, as it reflects an increasingly alarming dynamic since the last century.

At Active Humber we are raising awareness of Move The Date and how we can all, in sport and physical activity, ensure the Humber’s many sports clubs and organisations are planet-friendly. Because we believe no matter what colour your kit is, you should be green. And by that, we mean being environmentally friendly!

There are many ways to be greener:

  • Choosing sustainable snacks
  • Planting wildflowers in the corner of your field
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Provide recycling bins
  • Switch to LED lighting
  • Encourage walking, cycling, or car sharing
  • Use digital communication (emails, apps, and online schedules) instead of printing paper.
  • Repair and reuse equipment

Let’s use Earth Overshoot Day to ensure the Humber is not only getting more active, but in the best possible sustainable way!
