Postcards From The Humber: Stories That Get Us Moving

23-09-2026

This summer, our Postcards From The Humber campaign has been shining a spotlight on movement, celebrating the people, places and activities helping communities across the region get active.

At Active Humber, we’ve loved seeing the postcards you’ve shared from taking a dip in icy waters and volunteering at grassroots clubs to getting out for a local parkrun. Each postcard has told a different story, but together they’ve shown the many ways people across the Humber are finding opportunities to move, connect and enjoy their communities.

Our partners and local organisations play a vital role in making this possible. They create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active, meet others and make the most of the places where they live. Through Postcards From The Humber, we want to continue shining a light on the people, projects and places that make the Humber such a special place to live, work and be active.

Celebrating sport and competition in Cleethorpes

Over the summer, we supported the first-ever Beach Wrestling Championships in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire.

The event brought together more than 60 wrestlers from across the country for an exciting day of competition. With hundreds of local spectators attending, it created a fantastic atmosphere and showcased the growing appeal of beach wrestling in the UK.

It was a great example of how local spaces can provide opportunities for people to try something different, compete and come together as a community.

Volunteers making a difference in Barton-upon-Humber

We also met volunteers Steph, Henry and Shaun, who are making a difference in Barton-upon-Humber through Little Victories in the Community and Barton Inclusive FC (Teeny Tots), with a shared aim of changing lives through sport.

Volunteers are at the heart of so many community activities. They give their time, energy and skills to help create opportunities for others to get active and feel connected.

At Active Humber, we work with volunteering organisations to help make volunteering opportunities easy to find, accessible and inclusive, so more people can play their part in keeping the Humber moving.

Getting children active in Hull

Our Postcards From Hull also took us to West Park, East Park and Beresford Park, where children took part in skateboarding sessions as part of Healthy Holidays Hull's free summer activities.

With 54% of children and young people in the Humber not currently active enough, programmes like Healthy Holidays Hull are an important way to help children stay active, eat well and enjoy positive experiences during the school holidays.

By providing free activities in local communities, the programme helps make being active fun, accessible and easier for families to take part in.

Taking the plunge in East Riding

Things got a little chilly in East Riding, where the Ice Warriors swim group took a dip at Welton Waters Adventure Centre.

Open to people of all ages and abilities, the group provides advice and support to help people enjoy open water swimming safely covering everything from swimming techniques and safe areas to clothing and recovery.

Open water swimming can offer a range of physical and social benefits. As a low-impact form of exercise, swimming can support cardiovascular fitness while being gentle on the joints. For many people, it can also provide opportunities to connect with others and spend time outdoors.

If you’re thinking about trying open water swimming, it’s important to understand the risks and know how to stay safe.

Read our blog about how East Riding's Ice Warriors swim group makes open water swimming safe and fun.
