Active Withernsea's Get Going Grant Scheme Propels Physical Activity Initiatives in the Community
Active Withernsea has been delighted to support new ideas during 2023 to enable more people to be active through the Get Going Grants Scheme. The initiative provides funding opportunities to the Withernsea community to kickstart or expand on physical activity endeavours. The scheme has not only fuelled innovative projects but has also created a ripple effect of enthusiasm for an active and healthy lifestyle in the community.
Celebrating Successful Grants in 2023
In 2023, the Get Going Grant Scheme has seen remarkable success, empowering individuals, and organisations to bring their physical activity ideas to life. The following are highlights of the impactful grants awarded:
1. Green2Gold – University of Hull
Green2Gold, a University of Hull and Team GB project received grant funding for an activity trail in Withernsea. The project launched in June 2023 with an opening event in Withernsea which was attended by two Team GB Athletes, Mo Sbihi and Kate French. The project created 4 new trail routes throughout the town, for 25-minute to 70-minute walks, the routes which expand on and complement the existing Withernsea walking routes. There are 21 signposts in total to find around the town with lots of different activities to try, such as sport games, fitness challenges, nature activities, scavenger hunts, and brain games.
If you'd like to give the trails a go, you can pick up a map from the Active Withernsea shop at 170 Queen Street.
2. The Lookout Activity Sessions
The Lookout group received grant funding to provide physical activities for young people with SEND. The Lookout formed after mums within the community were facing similar issues with lack of access to activities to suit their children's special requirements and needs. Pippa, Rachel, Michelle and Claire came together to form The Lookout. When Pippa reached out to fellow parents, she soon found others telling a similar story. It encouraged her to get involved in setting up The Lookout, which she says is now going from strength to strength. The group is working to support and advise the parents and carers of children with a wide range of special educational needs.
Activities include cycling and utilising the adapted bikes, swimming sessions held at East Riding Leisure Withernsea, soft play, and games such as boccia, curling and football.
3. Withernsea Town Council – BMX Showcase
Withernsea Town Council received grant funding to provide a BMX showcase event with 3 professional riders delivering 4 interactive shows on the day. The event was used to highlight and unveil plans for the upcoming renovation and redevelopment of the skatepark and the All Wheelz expansion programme at Withernsea Primary School.
4. Active Sports
Active Sports received grant funding to provide free skate lessons at the skat park in Summer, Autumn 2023 and Spring 2024 with a maintenance workshop and a skate ranger course held in the Autumn.
5. JLT Disc Golf
JLT Disc Golf received grant funding to purchase equipment and provide free introductory Disc Golf taster sessions from Autumn 2023 to Easter 2024 with indoor putting sessions scheduled over the Winter period.
