Equality and Diversity

Active Humber Statement of Intent

Active Humber is fully committed to the principles of equality of opportunity and is responsible for ensuring that no job applicant, employee, volunteer or member receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of age, gender, disability, race, ethnic origin, nationality, colour, parental or marital status, pregnancy, religious belief, class or social background, sexual preference or political belief.

Active Humber will ensure that there will be open admission to all those who wish to work in the partnership or alongside the Active Humber in all aspects of Physical activity and sport activities and that they are treated fairly.

Active Humber is committed to achieving gender parity (with a minimum of 30% female) and greater diversity generally on its board, including, but not limited to ethnicity, sexual preference and disability.

Active Humber Equal Opportunities Policy

The policy has been created with an aim to improve equality of access to sport and the promotion of equal opportunities for all.

Equality Legislation

Public Organisations are legally obliged to ensure that they do not discriminate against participants, employees, and volunteers on grounds of disability, gender, and race.

Our Commitment to Diversity on the Active Humber board:

We do not pursue diversity for the sake of it or to achieve a 'tick-box' result; we do it because diversity brings new thinking and challenge to old ideas. Not only do we want our board and staff to reflect the population they serve we want them to ensure we consider and cater for all aspects of Humber society when we make decisions about where we use our resources. We are committed to having no less than 1/3rd of our board from either gender, we welcome and encourage applications from all members of society without prejudice to age, sexual orientation, disability, gender, religion or race. We will ensure any board vacancies receive the widest possible coverage to guarantee that opportunities are seen and available to all.

Active Humber is a recognised Disability Confident Employer

Disability Confident is a government scheme that supports employers to make the most of the talents disabled people can bring to the workplace.

When your organisation signs up to become ‘Disability Confident Committed’, the scheme will provide advice and guidance to help you think differently about disability, and improve how you attract, recruit and retain disabled workers. The Disability Confident scheme replaced the previous Two Ticks scheme.

Not only does signing up to the Disability Confident scheme help you to think about how you might make your workplace more accessible, it also demonstrates to your staff that you are committed to equality in the workplace, which is a good way to encourage employees to talk about disabilities that are often non-visible, including hearing loss.

The scheme also aims to help you:

  • draw from the widest possible pool of talent
  • secure high-quality staff who are skilled, loyal and hard-working
  • improve employee morale and commitment by demonstrating that you treat all employees fairly

As well as visiting the Disability Confident website, you can find out more about the scheme by contacting your local Jobcentre. The Jobcentre can support you in your application for Disability Confident and advise you on the steps you can take as an employer to qualify.

Race equality

Active Humber is an anti-racist organisation working towards racial equality across the Humber. The use of language in talking and writing about racial equality is important and at Active Humber we use the following guidelines.
