Community Support

Over the past year, Active Humber has developed a Community Support Plan to better support sports clubs, community organisations, volunteers and coaches across the Humber. The aim is to strengthen the foundations that help local sport and physical activity grow safely and sustainably.

Clubs and Organisations

We have begun working with local clubs to understand their needs and challenges. One example of this is our work with ALTUS Running Club, where conversations have focused on safe operation, good practice and creating a positive environment that supports both members and volunteers.

“Active Humber has been a huge support to ALTUS Running during a key period of growth for our Club. From health and safety guidance to funding advice, their expertise has helped us build strong foundations and move forward with confidence. Their ongoing support has allowed us to focus on what matters most - creating an inclusive, welcoming running community, and helping more local people start on their running journey in Hull. We hope to continue working with Active Humber in the future.” ALTUS Running Club

Volunteers

Volunteers are central to community sport. The plan focuses on making sure volunteers feel confident, supported and valued. This includes improving guidance, offering development opportunities and ensuring they have what they need to continue giving their time and energy to local sport.

Coaches

Coaches often shape people’s first experiences of sport and activity. Active Humber is exploring how to strengthen coach development locally by working more closely with CIMSPA. The aim is to create clearer development pathways linked to recognised standards, helping coaches grow their skills and support their clubs more effectively over time.

Movement Fund Reporting: Increasing Investment and Support Across the Humber

There has been a significant rise in Movement Fund applications and funding across the Humber, showing growing confidence in the fund and increasing demand for support. Reporting looks specifically at Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire to ensure funding decisions reflect local needs and priorities.

Importantly, organisations that are not successful in their first application are offered one-to-one support from Active Humber. This includes help understanding the criteria, improving project plans and strengthening future bids. As a result, more groups are better equipped to access funding and deliver sustainable activity in their communities. Overall, investment is not only increasing but becoming more targeted, fair and responsive to local need.

Community Ambassadors: Growth, Development and Future Sustainability

The Community Ambassadors programme continues to strengthen the link between local communities and the sport and physical activity system. The number of ambassadors has grown in 2025, and their impact remains strong. They act as trusted local voices, encouraging participation and helping to reduce barriers to activity. Some ambassadors have been supported to apply to the Movement Fund, enabling them to lead projects that directly respond to community needs.

Looking ahead, the programme is focusing on long-term sustainability. Through work with The St. Lawrence Academy, younger people will join the ambassador team, bringing fresh perspectives and creating leadership opportunities for the next generation. The programme already includes people of different ages, backgrounds and abilities, and Active Humber remains committed to ensuring it continues to reflect and represent the communities it serves.
