Advocating for the environment

Active Humber has continued to play an important role in promoting environmental sustainability and tackling climate change across the Active Partnerships network and the wider sport sector.

Our CEO sits on the UK Sport Environment Climate Coalition, is a member of the Sport England external reference group on environmental sustainability and is the chair of the Active Partnership environmental sustainability group and so helping to shape policy from a local to a national level. David also spoke and presented at conferences across the country on the link between climate, physical activity, and inequalities.

At a regional level, Active Humber has worked closely with the Yorkshire & Humber Climate Commission. We have helped ensure sport and physical activity are included in plans for the region to reach net zero. Our CEO has spoken at their annual conference and is involved in their public affairs group.

We have also shared our knowledge and experience with other Active Partnerships, supporting them to promote physical activity in ways that are environmentally sustainable.

The Active Partnerships Environmental Sustainability Conference brought together inspirational speakers, practical workshops, and strong collaboration across the network. We have shared more about this event in our blog.

Internal actions

Within our own organisation, we have taken practical steps to reduce our carbon footprint. We have:

  • Renewed our partnership with the Aura Innovation Centre as a carbon-friendly office base
  • Reviewed our travel arrangements to reduce emissions wherever possible
  • Moved all investments to environmentally responsible financial products
  • Completed Sport England’s environmental maturity matrix to assess our current position and identify areas for improvement

These actions support our ongoing environmental sustainability plan and help us continue to improve.

Active environments

Over the past year, Active Humber has worked closely with local authorities, planning teams, transport leaders, and property developers across the region. Our aim is to strengthen conversations about active environments, active design, and active travel. By linking planning, transport, and development discussions together, we help ensure walking, cycling, and everyday movement are considered as part of one joined-up approach.

This means physical activity is built into the design of streets, neighbourhoods, and public spaces from the very beginning, rather than added later.

We are focused on building strong, long-term relationships with the people who design and shape places. By influencing decisions early, we help create healthier, better-connected communities. Ultimately, this work ensures more people have the opportunity to be active in their daily lives, close to where they live.

Sustainable Development Goals:

15 Life on land, 14 Life below water, 13 Climate action, 6 Clean water and sanitation
