Time for Action on Racism in Sport

As part of the Yorkshire and Humber anti-racism in sport group Active Humber helped to organise the Time for Action event which was held in Leeds in November.

The ‘Time for Action on Racism in Sport’ conference featured a number of keynote speakers, presentations and a panel discussion covering many different key areas concerning racism in sport.

The use of sport for good was highlighted as well as the importance of signing up to the Yorkshire and Humber Anti-Racism in Sport Group's pledge.

The pledge has been signed by more than 150 organisations across Yorkshire and Humber so far!

Race Equality Week: Celebrating Welcome House

During Race Equality Week we celebrated the work we've been doing with Welcome House. Welcome House are a Hull-based organisation that provides crucial support to asylum seekers and refugees across the North Bank. We have supported Welcome House since their creation, and we wanted to shine a light on the work of one of our region's amazing Voluntary Community Social Enterprises (VCSE). Welcome House also uses sport to help support their community and recently established a football team, Acorns FC.

White Ribbon Training: Working to End Male Violence Against Women

This year, Active Humber staff delivered White Ribbon assemblies to over 2,500 secondary school students across Hull, encouraging them to take a stand against male violence towards women. The sessions focused on raising awareness about male violence, promoting respect and equality, and challenging harmful attitudes, all in support of the White Ribbon campaign. We also engaged professionals from the NHS and Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise sectors, highlighting their role in supporting victims and preventing violence, and encouraging them to champion the White Ribbon Promise within their organisations. With the support of sports professionals, we were able to amplify the White Ribbon message, showing how men, especially in sports, can be powerful allies in creating lasting change and fostering a safer, more respectful society.

Bystander Awareness Training: Empowering Communities to Tackle Racism

As part of the Yorkshire and Humber Anti-Racism in Sport Group, Active Humber, North Yorkshire Sport and Yorkshire Sport Foundation identified the need for targeted training to address racism within the sports sector. A subgroup was formed to explore training options, and we chose to collaborate with Graham Goulden from Community in Motion. Graham’s expertise in Bystander Intervention Train the Trainer programs, previously effective in addressing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), informed the development of a tailored anti-racism course.

In 2024, 20 participants, including five Sports Workforce Officers (SWOs) from across Yorkshire and the Humber, attended a two-day course. These newly trained trainers are now equipped to deliver free bystander intervention training to organisations throughout the Humber region. This initiative reflects our belief that prevention starts within communities, empowering individuals and groups to foster safer, more inclusive environments. By providing practical tools and fostering collaboration, this training is driving meaningful change and building resilience across our communities.
