Opening School Facilities

Making Physical Activity More Accessible for Young People

The Opening School Facilities Fund (OSF) has made it easier for children and young people across the Humber region to stay active and healthy in 2024. Through OSF funding, schools have opened their doors for over 1,300 activity sessions outside regular school hours, reaching more than 5,300 children and young people. With a notable 44,488 attendances, these sessions have given young people regular opportunities to engage in physical activity in a familiar, supportive environment. By offering safe, structured spaces at schools, the OSF program helps young people build positive habits, boost their physical fitness, and support their mental well-being through fun, social activities.

Building Healthier, More Connected Communities

OSF sessions have extended beyond school-age children to make a positive impact on the wider community. These activities, held in the evenings, on weekends, and during school holidays, have brought together 1,754 people, including adults and families, to enjoy physical activity in a school setting. By making physical activity more accessible and convenient, OSF-funded sessions encourage people of all ages to stay active, creating healthier lifestyles and a stronger sense of community. Opening school spaces for these sessions has proven to be a valuable way to support well-being, social connection, and fitness in a familiar setting where everyone feels welcome.

Creating Active Schools

The Creating Active Schools Framework provides schools with a structure to embed physical activity at the heart of their culture and ethos. In 2024 we increased the number of schools implementing the framework for three to six schools across the Humber.

Girls Carousel

In the academic year of 23/24 we delivered 7 girls carousels across the Humber, from the girls carousel St Lawrence have now embedded wellbeing walks into the year 11 curriculum because the school saw the value and impact of them through the carousel work.

This academic year we working in partnership with St Lawrence Academy in Scunthorpe to sustain this work in school, St Lawrence have identified a group of leaders to take part in the Street Games NextGen leadership course so that students in school can encourage and engage students in younger year groups to be physically active.

The carousel model has had much success over the past few years and this academic year we will be working with alternative provision settings in North Lincs to pilot this for their students, this will be working with both boys and girls.

Watch our case study videos to see the impact of the girls carousel at Oasis Academy in Immingham and Boulevard Academy in Hull.

Kit Out Hull

Kit Out Hull is kit recycling scheme designed to collect donations of clean, good condition sport kit and donate it back into the community to provide children and young people with sports kit so they can take part in sport and physical activity. It has been designed to recycle clean, good condition sports kits to keep textiles out of landfill (and the back of people’s cupboards!) for the good of our planet as well as ensuring that young people are not being held back from being physically active. The scheme was started by Active Humber in partnership with Street Games.

Physical Literacy

As a staff team we are now all committed to embedding Physical Literacy into our work through staff and board training and having regular team meetings to ensure we continue to do this.

We are looking forward to embedding Physical Literacy into our place based expansion work across the Humber in 2025.

Active Humber in partnership with Withernsea High School and East Riding Place Partner are part of the first cohort on the Patchwork Programme through Sport England and the Positive Experiences Collective.

This project is looking at ways to embed Physical Literacy into school physical education and enrichment at Withernsea High, this is a 9 month programme which started in November 2024 and we can't wait to share our learning with you all along the way.
