Sport England Investment in the Humber
In 2025, all four areas of the Humber were chosen as part of 80 places in England that Sport England is investing in. These 80 places were selected because they have some of the highest levels of physical inactivity. The aim of this funding is to:
- Reduce inactivity
- Tackle inequalities
- Create long-term, lasting change
- Build healthier, more inclusive and resilient communities
Progress for Each Area:
- East Yorkshire Place Partnership – received full funding and will use it in 2026 to deliver change locally.
- Towards an Active Hull Partnership – also received full funding and will begin delivery in 2026.
- North East Lincolnshire Place Partnership – received development funding and is applying for full funding.
- North Lincolnshire Partnership – recently received development funding and is building its team to prepare for a full funding application.
Active Humber has supported all four areas by:
- Helping them prepare their funding applications
- Supporting planning to increase activity levels
- Focusing particularly on people who are the least active
This programme is a major step forward in reducing inequalities and improving health across the Humber.
What This Investment Means
Sport England’s “Place Expansion” approach focuses on:
- Understanding what prevents people from being active
- Bringing local organisations together
- Creating solutions designed by and for local communities
- Delivering long-term, sustainable change
This is the largest revenue investment ever made in the Humber to support community sport and physical activity. In 2026, Active Humber will work closely with partners to put these plans into action.
Bringing Place Partners Together
Active Humber regularly runs Humber Huddle sessions. These sessions allow local partners to:
- Share progress
- Exchange ideas
- Solve challenges together
Partners have also met with the national Active Partnership organisation to give feedback on how the programme is working so far.
System Maturity Matrix
In a recent podcast, Adam Jamieson and Jennifer Mount from East Yorkshire Place Partnership, talk to David Gent, CEO of Active Humber, about their experiences in using the System Maturity Matrix.
